　すでに２回にわたって紹介してきましたが、まだまだ言い足りないことがあります。
　読後、いろいろなことを考えさせられました。それはこの作品が名作である証です。

　ムア夫人とアデラが、マラバー洞窟で聞いた「こだま」とは、何だったのでしょう？
　ムア夫人は、次のように考えを巡らしていますが、これが実に興味深いです。

　「さいしょの洞窟には何が住んでいたのだろう。何か非常に古い、非常に小さなもの
　だったのだ。時間よりも前、空間よりも前のものだったのだ。何か獅子鼻をした、優
　しさなどとは無縁のもの ― 死ぬことのない虫そのものだったのだ。」（P327）

　つまり、ムア夫人はそこに、何か目に見えない神秘的な存在を感じていたのです。
　その「存在」が「こだま」を生じさせ、何やら不可解な体験をさせたようなのです。

　「時間よりも前、空間よりも前のもの」は、古代インドの神のようなものでしょうか。
　それが、侵入者としてのイギリス人を排除しようと、襲いかかったのでしょうか。

　いずれにしてもアデラは、「こだま」に憑かれたようになってしまいました。
　そして不思議と、アジズに対する訴えを取り下げた途端に、解放されたのです。

　ここには、なにやら深遠な象徴的意味がありそうですが、私にはよく分かりません。
　ただ、幻覚とか錯覚とかではなく、インドの神秘が関わっているような気がします。

　なお、「こだま」に何かの存在を感じ取ったムア夫人は、最も神秘的な登場人物です。
　彼女は何も見ていないのに、アジズが無罪であると直感して、インド人側に立ちます。

　そのため「エスミス・エスムア」とインドの神名で呼ばれたのも、どこか象徴的です。
　そして船上で亡くなり、インド洋に葬られたとき本当に神となった、と私は思います。

　ちょうどそのとき、アデラが裁判の証言台で、アジズへの訴えを取り下げたのです。
　私には、神となったムア夫人が、アデラに適切な行動を取らせたように思えるのです。

　ところで、長官のタートンがフィールディングに言った、次のような言葉があります。
　イギリス人とインド人は、交際するのは良いが、心から親しくなってはいけない、と。

　なぜか？　それぞれの民族が持つ神々が、対立するからではないのでしょうか。
　アジズとフィールディングがどんなに親しくなっても、越えられぬ溝が残りそうです。
